Week 2

The leaves in the little bag is Anise Hyssop. This is a mint like plant that have a flavor similar to black Licorice. It can be steep for tea, added to a desert, It can be also dried for tea but actually in the tea world, I believe whole fresh leaves are preferred. The crushed leaves of tea we are used to seeing is actually a lower grade of tea. Anise hyssop as a tea is good for sore throats , or so I read. The herb bundle is thyme, oregano and Lovage. Lovage is also known as poor man's celery, it has a distinct flavor you can add this to a salad or a pasta you can create with greens and oil. The other bunch of the bluish leaves is Kale. This is our first harvest of Kale...it is a good healthy green that can be steamed or wilted at the end of a saute'. Some people will eat kale raw but most cook it.Kale is often used in soups, omelets.... Some even juice kale. In the fall when light frost it it can be sweeter. I hope that answers the questions of the unknown greens. Dan and I hope the pea plants will start dropping their pods...the plants have buds on them. The weather hasn't been encouraging to much to grow....the cool weather but today is gorgeous and I suspect some growing will be happening. Otherwise all is well in the garden . Things are really taking shape as the majority of the garden is planted. Jacqui

1st Basket

We want to take this moment, on a wet day, to tell you that you are very important to our farm operation. Without the certainty of your membership we must rely on the uncertainty of week to week sale to float our boat. You all provide some stability to what is in all reality something only moderately so. Your membership also provides us what is most valuable to us - more time for us on farm, tending the crops, which should be reflected in a higher quality product. So, your investment in us allows us more time to invest in the farm which, in turn, we hope will make for a better farm – better food, better fuel and nutrition for all of us. So thank you so much because the role you play is no small part. And we have big hopes and dreams for our humble place and I hope you’ll take the time this summer to pay us visit and see first hand where your veggies live, and perhaps we’ll get a chance to talk of hopes and dreams - food and health and the human part. And perhaps we’ll figure some things out or merely stimulate some much needed conversations, questions, and curiosities. Or perhaps you simply want your food, tis your choice. Anyway, I want you all to know that we certainly appreciate your investment, your taking a chance with us, for coming season, and thank you. We are very hopeful for our best yet.

Hello 2009 Willoway Farm CSA member! I hope you are as excited as we are for the coming season. And thank you so much for choosing us to be your farmers. This marks our third growing season at Willoway and, if I can trust my hunch, it will be our most fruitful thus far. As I sit and type the garden is growing and this spring has been very fair - a good mix of rain, sun, cool, warmth.
